Final Year Project

Project Title

Bonded Social Capital within Ethnic Communities in Karachi and Their impact on Civic Engagement

Description

The project aims to understand how the diversity in Karachi affects the local political reality and contribution from the citizens in terms of being active participants in a democratic order. To add nuance, the ideology of nation-states as a modern phenomenon and an artificial way of organizing people shall be highlighted. As such, the purpose is to demonstrate that ethnic communities tend to have very close ties within themselves, but largely lack trust in people belonging to other communities. This proves as a critical barrier to collective action and civic engagement as Karachi is a hub of different communities residing together, and to address and solve the issues at hand, it is important to have bridging social capital as well.
